The caverns we visited are located in The Black Hills, which are a small, isolated mountain range rising from the Great Plains of North America in western South Dakota and extending into Wyoming, USA. Set off from the main body of the Rocky Mountains , the region is somewhat of a geological anomaly. The region is considered sacred by many of the Plains Native Americans. It is accurately described as an "island of trees in a sea of grass. It is a home to the tallest peaks between the Rocky Mountains and the Alps in Europe.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial in Black Hills, near Keystone, South Dakota, is a United States Presidential Memorial that represents the first 150 years of the history of the United States of America with the 60-foot (18 m) sculptures of former U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The entire memorial covers 1,278 acres (5.17 kmē), and is 5,725 feet (1,745 m) above sea level. The mountain was named after Charles E. Rushmore, a prominent New York lawyer, in 1885. The project of carving Mount Rushmore originally started with the purpose of increasing tourism in the region of South Dakota. The carving started in 1927 and ended in 1941.
