Cuba Map The Republic of Cuba, population 11,346,670 est.2005. (the largest of the Greater Antilles), the Isle of Youth and various adjacent small islands. Its name is said to be derived from the Taíno word meaning "a central place." At least as early as colonial times it's name was given to areas near Santiago de Cuba. Island is located in the northern Caribbean at the confluence of the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean - south of the eastern United States, and the Bahamas, west of the Turks and Caicos Islands and Haiti, and east of Mexico. The Cayman Islands and Jamaica are south of eastern part.
First visit by Europeans was when explorer Christopher Columbus made landfall here for the first time on October 28, 1492.

I had been to this beautiful island five times now, and I just love coming back. I find people very helpful and friendly and very proud of being who they are. Every resort I've been to was clean, with no problems at all. And if you love beaches, Cuban music, continuous sun, palms, and ocean try it. You won't regret it.
I know I'll be back.

What does personal belongings means?

In general terms it is understood that personal belongings means the items, whether new or used, that a traveler could reasonably need for his personal use during his trip, taking into account all the circumstances of the journey and intermediate stops, excluding any goods imported or exported for commercial purposes.

Can I import medicines?

It is possible to import up to 10 kilos of medicine which must be inside their original packaging. These medicines shall not include any of the ones pertaining to the category of prohibited or regulated medications.

How and where must I lodge the "CUSTOMS DECLARATION"?

Customs declaration shall be made in writing when importing items prohibited or regulated and subject to payment of Customs duties or when intending to re-export them. In this cases the official form shall be used.

On the other hand, in most of the Cuban ports and airports prepared for clearing travelers Customs has organized a dual-channel control system. In selecting either the red or the green channel the traveler is silently declaring whether or not he is carrying items requiring to be presented to Customs. This silent declaration involves the same responsibility as if it had been done it verbally or in writing.

Which are the items I should declare?

In addition to
prohibited and regulated items travelers should declare:

  • When import is made under the intention of a subsequent re-exportation:
    • cash and other valuables exceeding an amount of five thousand (5,000) US dollars;
    • works of art and museum-valuable objects;
  • New or used items not being part of personal belongings
  • Items destined to third persons.
  • What is the allowable limit for my import?

    Travelers are allowed to import - in addition to their personal belongings - new or used articles amounting for a total value of two hundred and fifty (250.00) Pesos. Travelers are entitled to make use of this right only once in a calendar year as the allowed amount is not accumulative.

    What happens if I am to import items exceeding a value of $250.00?

    Items exceeding the allowable amount ($250.00) shall be subject to seizure.

    What is the amount of the applicable Customs duties?

    Non-commercial tariff applicable to items imported by travelers is equal to the 100% of the value. Out of the two hundred and fifty (250.00) Pesos which are allowed to be imported, the first fifty (50.00) Pesos shall be relieved from payment, and thus the maximum payable amount of duties shall be two hundred (200.00) Pesos.

    Travelers not permanently residing in Cuba and those traveling abroad for personal reasons shall proceed to pay all payable duties in freely convertible currency.

    Why is it that - if I have already paid my excess luggage weight to the airline - I have to pay again at Customs?

    What you have paid to the airline is the cost of the excess luggage you have weighted while dispatching your flight. Every traveler, according to the class of flight, is allowed to carry luggage within a given maximum weight, Above that weight an excess tariff is payable. Therefore, what travelers have to pay in Customs are the so-called "Customs duties" established in accordance with the value of the goods being imported.

    What is the amount of Customs duties applicable to export items?

    What is the amount of Customs duties applicable to export items? Exports in Cuba are not subject to payment of Customs duties.
