The mountainous region of
various shapes and relatively lower altitude forms the advantageous
natural conditions mainly for cross-country skiing and tourism.
Mostly gradual slopes and wide,
maintained routes with rather small differences in elevation enable skiing
also for not very capable skiers. But there are also downhill courses
satisfying the
most demanding skiers. Besides of the skiers also fans of bobsleighs and
toboggans get their money's worth at Jizera Mountains. Right on the foot of the mountain
range there are situated relatively big towns like Liberec and Jablonec
nad Nisou, that represent the natural starting point for part of the
mountain visitors with very good accommodation, catering, social, cultural
and other facilities.
There is a ski centre for
downhill skiing, cross-country and ski jump, the regular scene of annual
international ski jump competitions at the edge of Liberec.
Other ski
centers are mainly territorial concentration of cross - country tracks and
tourist routes, downhill tracks, cableways, ski lifts and other sporting
facilities.
The main such place is in
Bedrichov (easily accessible from Jablonec nad Nisou), the best quality
and demanding downhill tracks with continuing facilities are at Spicak
near Tanvald, the scene of the European competitions. Well known is also
Jizerka in particular as a setting -off point of the biggest cross-country
race in the republic, The Jizera Fifty.
Except for Liberec also Plavy
and Tanvald, with one of the rare bobsleigh course, are connected with
ski jumps. Smrzovka is the sledging centre.
