Friday
morning I got up early, early, we had over 900 miles in the front of us to
Walnut Creek California. We knew that there was no chance to make it to
the pre wedding reception that afternoon, but we could make it for the
wedding next day. Back on to I-80 west with the hope, that nothing is
going to go wrong that day. And we drove and drove, stopping only for gas
and some small snacks by-passing Salt Lake City, entering Nevada. It was
really hot that day, I held the thermometer out of the window from the
motor home and the temperature was 45 degrees Celsius (that’s around 113
Fahrenheit), traveling around 60 miles per hour. Our only air conditioner
was 6x60 (six windows open doing sixty). We entertain our self listening
to the truck drivers on the CB radio, some of them are real jokers, and
watching scenery around. We got a real surprise somewhere in the middle of
Nevada, when all of the sudden it got dark and we drove into weirdest
storm I had ever seen with thunder, lightning and on the top of it mix of
rain and sand from the dessert messing our windshield, making driving
miserable. Luckily this “sand storm?” didn’t last too long.
There was some snow
on the mountains outside Reno Nevada.
We got some relieve from the heat
and sun in the late afternoon around Reno Nevada and then another
surprise. No one told us about
agriculture inspection station at the Nevada/California border. It looks
just like any border crossing between two countries. Being tired from
driving, for a second I thought we got lost somewhere and are crossing
back into Canada.
The state agriculture officer at the check point asked if we had any fresh
fruit or exotic pets and confiscated some oranges he had found in the
motor home fridge that were there since we left
Barrie.
Well, we made it to
California.
Later
on we took the wrong turn somewhere around I-680 and then we had spend
about hour and half looking for our destination address in Walnut Creek,
outskirts of Oakland, but when we reached my brother in laws house around
midnight, everybody there was sleeping, so we just parked the motor home
on the street, both of us hungry and tired as hell and went to sleep. It
was bloody long day and we had wedding to go to next day. One thing I was
happy about; we didn’t have one little problem with the motor home that
day.
