Sierra Mar, Santiago de Cuba, December 2005.
Winter had just started, and I got itchy feet already. Had to get away from here for a while to relax. After nine months, since the first announcement, and twenty six years of service I lost my job in Barrie because the company I worked for is moving down to Mexico. Anyway.
Keith and Angie, together with some friends left for their favorite place in the middle of Sierra Maestra mountain range, and on the shores of Caribbean Sea in Santiago de Cuba, Brisas Sierra Mar, Cuba, to celebrate their anniversary. Without telling them I showed up to surprise them. We had good time as always, except for an incident where Keith got attacked by malfunctioning elevator door, and resort didn’t feel they are responsible. Some people had the problem with sand bugs on the beach; not a big deal, really, I got bitten only once. It’s hard to understand how anything can live in hot sand like that anyway. My survival was at the beach bar with excellent service from Omar, the bartender. One day I had rented a scooter and went for afternoon trip thru the town of Chivirico and continued on the very rough road, but beautiful scenery with Sierra Maestra on one side and Caribbean Sea on the other.
I had to watch for parts of the road being washed off after the hurricane. Very hot and strong sun, bring some water with you if you decide to do the same. Another day we went for mud bath treatment and mineral spring shower (under the hose), and massage. Not sure if it helped anything, still didn’t notice any hair growth, but it sure was good for laugh. We all look like some prehistoric tribe. I recommend it. Usually we had buffet dinner, (there are 4 restaurants and a snack bar), except for one evening when we ate at the "Ecological" restaurant where all food is grown on site and the fish is caught same day; my lobster was excellent. I must say that the shows here were better then any other I’ve seen in Cuba, especially a water ballet show. Another treat after the shows was at the piano bar, Spanish coffees and good music. We had tried disco couple of times, but at that time it wasn’t very busy. It was definitely worth the money to be at Sierra Mar. The friends I made, and the locals I met will always be in my memory.
