It was our next place to visit. I enjoy motorcycles, so does my son and since we were in Rapid City still waiting for our RV to be fixed, it was only 30 miles away. Unfortunately we were there one week before the actual rally starts, but there was lot’s of bikes there already and the town was ready for the event with all the stores having products related to bikes and bikers. We had spent most of the day there, wandering around, eating in few restaurants and just enjoying the great atmosphere in this usually sleepy town.
The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is a motorcycle rally held annually in Sturgis, South Dakota.
It was founded on August 14, 1938 by the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club who still own and operate the tracks, hillclimb, and field areas that the rally is concentrated around. The first rally lasted two days and was focused on racing and stunts.
The founder is generally considered to be Clarence "Pappy" Hoel who is still honored in various ways by the crowd at this town.
The main focus of a motorcycle rally was originally racing and stunts. This could include half mile track racing (the first year, there were 19 participants), board wall crashes (intentional), ramp jumps and head on collisions with automobiles.
The Rally has been held every year, with exceptions during World War II.
In modern times, there has been a revitalization of motorcycling and a new group of fans that are interested in the old rallies. This has led to huge attendance numbers for classic rallies such as this one.
Attendance was estimated at 514,951 in 2004, and 525,250 in 2005.

Live at Sturgis
Every song is good, including such
as the rollicking "Deja Voodoo" and the great Donnie Van Zant tribute to his
brother Ronnie "Rebel to Rebel." Every song is from their live concert in
Sturgis, SD (hence the CD's title), except for the very last track, "Just One
Girl," which is a studio track recorded in 1999. It's a fairly mellow track,
co-written by Don Barnes, Danny Chauncey, and Jim Peterik, and co-produced by
Barnes and Chauncey. It's a nice song, and is good to mellow-out to after the
fiery live versions of "Caught Up In You" and "Hold On Loosely."
